Date: November 14th 2007 Project: Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

Glasgow was awarded the 2014 Commonwealth Games on Friday with the announcement coming from Sri Lanka by the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly. Glasgow won by 47 votes to 24 and had been competing against Nigerian capital Abuja for the right to host the games.

HOK Sport worked on the successful bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and were tasked with various technical aspects including preparing games overlay plans for every single venue included in the bid submission, thus ensuring that the city of Glasgow was chosen by the Commonwealth Committee. "It is a great day for Glasgow and the announcement that the Commonwealth Games will be coming to the city in 2014. Glasgow will make these games one of the greatest sporting events the country has seen," said HOK Sport Senior Principal John Barrow. "We have been involved in and helped many cities around the world with their sports aspirations, but it is of particular pleasure when one so close to home is successful."

HOK Sport was also at the forefront of the 2012 Olympics coming to London as they assisted technically in the bid stage, ensuring the city won the right to host such a prestigious Games.

"Glasgow absolutely deserved this win. We are proud to have played an important role in developing the venue overlays and preparing the bid book plans to satisfy the technical requirements of the submission," said Janine Graham, Project Architect for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid.

It has been estimated that it will cost the city £288m to stage the sporting event, with most of the funding coming from the Scottish Government.
