As a Senior Principal of Populous, John is involved in the planning and design of major sports and leisure facilities. He managed the construction of Faro and Benfica stadia in Portugal for Euro 2004, and headed the design team for the Speed Skating Arena for the Olympic Winter Games in Torino 2006, which won the IOC-IAKS Gold Medal 2007.
Formula 1 motor racing interests led to the design and masterplanning of the new Dubai Autodrome, completed in 2004. He is currently working on the new Silverstone masterplan. On home ground, the grandstand and racetrack at Great Leighs, Essex is the first new racecourse to receive approval in the UK for over 70 years.
John headed the team for the O2 arena which was constructed inside the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London and opened in 2007. This scheme broke new ground in sports and leisure buildings and is currently the most visited venue in the world. In addition, the arena has won the Pollstar Award for Best New Concert Venue and Best International Arena of the Year.
The Milton Keynes Stadium, completed in 2007, incorporates a hotel complex and is a state-of-the-art scheme which has set the standard for medium sized stadia.
As Principal in Charge John headed the Populous team master planning the wininning London 2012 Games Bid, and more recently, Glasgow's bid for 2014 Commonwealth Games.
John is now leading the Grand Stade project for the Olympique Lyonnais, a world-class innovative 60,000 seat stadium complex for the French premier football club and a new 800,000sqft arena district in Abu Dhabi. He is also in charge of the London 2012 Olympic Overlay project, won in Spring 2009.
