In August 2008, thousands of people gathered at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, for the The 2008 Democratic National Convention. To welcome an anticipated crowd of 50,000 attendees, delegates and media personnel, Populous was enlisted to provide primary overlay for the event as part of a design/build team.
Populous completed overlay drawings for the site and the arena, incorporating the needs and required elements from more than 25 different constituent groups. Sightline studies determined the podium location, and site studies helped locate media workspaces. Populous was involved in the planning and design of 160,000 square feet of temporary office facilities for 98 media organizations, housed in 4 separate tent structures around the site. Broadcast compounds for the 5 major networks were provided, as well as designated compounds for catering, VIP transportation, delegate transportation and vendor needs.
Within the Pepsi Center, Populous led the effort to overlay DNC space requirements at every level of the Arena. The event was a success, with overlay build out completed in 6 weeks, and complete restoration of the Pepsi Center building and site wrapped up in just 18 days.
The stage and podium design was done by RK Productions, and the project team for design and construction consisted of Turner and Alvarado Construction.
